Region 1 of 4

Southcentral: Anchorage, Girdwood, Kenai Peninsula.

Alaska’s most-visited region, and where most itineraries begin. Anchorage is the metro base with Chugach behind it, Girdwood carries Alyeska Resort and the Nordic Spa, Seward is the Kenai Fjords gateway (2h 30 to 3h drive), Homer sits at the end of the Kenai Peninsula on Kachemak Bay. Whittier and Valdez handle Prince William Sound cruise disembarkation.

Region 2 of 4

Denali the mountain at alpenglow from Wonder Lake, warm-pink summit reflected in still water, boreal spruce foreground

Interior: Denali, Fairbanks, Talkeetna.

Denali, the Great One in Koyukon Athabaskan, sets the tone. In-park lodges at Kantishna sit 90 miles inside the park by bus; gateway hotels line Mile 0 near the entrance. Fairbanks, 200 miles further north, is Alaska’s aurora capital, September through March. Talkeetna handles flightseeing to the summit. Anchorage to Denali runs 4h 30 to 5h, not the 3h 45 Google Maps suggests.

Region 3 of 4

Southeast: Juneau, Ketchikan, Sitka, Skagway.

Alaska’s cruise-port corridor along the Inside Passage. Juneau is the state capital and glacier-cruise hub, Ketchikan the salmon-run first port north from Seattle, Sitka carries Russian heritage, Skagway anchors the gold-rush interpretive route. Every port has walkable pre or post-cruise stays; we tag them cruise-friendly with distance-to-berth notes.

Region 4 of 4

Arctic tundra outside Utqiagvik in late summer, low subarctic sun, wide-open tundra with distant Brooks Range foothills

Arctic + Bush: Utqiagvik, Kotzebue, Nome.

Alaska north of the Arctic Circle and off the road system. Utqiagvik is the northernmost community in the United States, 320 miles above the Arctic Circle, reachable only by air. Kotzebue and Nome anchor the Northwest, Bethel the Yukon Delta. Aurora sits directly overhead here in winter, midnight sun runs May to August. Lodging is limited and priced accordingly; we cover it because travellers ask.

Aurora season: September to March. Fairbanks, 200 miles north of Anchorage at 64.8°N, sits directly under the auroral oval; the geomagnetic corridor and dark-sky sky make it the highest-probability base in the state. March’s vernal equinox often runs the strongest displays of the season. Anchorage sees the aurora only during elevated KP; Fairbanks or Chena, not Anchorage, is where a dedicated aurora trip belongs.
