Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, Talkeetna
Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge is built around a single asset: on a clear day its great-room windows and viewing deck look straight up the Susitna valley to Denali, roughly 60 miles away. It is one of the few hotels in the state where the mountain view is the reason to book.
Where it is
On a ridge just outside Talkeetna, about two and a half hours north of Anchorage and roughly the same south of the Denali park entrance. Talkeetna itself is the base for flightseeing and glacier landings.
Who it suits
Travellers breaking the Anchorage to Denali drive, and anyone planning a Denali flightseeing trip, which departs from Talkeetna rather than the park entrance.
When to go
Summer for flightseeing and the best odds of a clear mountain. Denali is famously shy: plan for the view to be a bonus rather than a guarantee.
