Alaska cruise-port hotels
Cruise-port hotels serve three trips: the embarkation night (Seattle or Vancouver), the port-of-call overnight stopover, and the disembarkation night after a one-way northbound sailing (Whittier or Seward). Each one has a different priority. Embarkation is walk-to-berth; port-of-call is atmosphere plus a bed; disembarkation is proximity to your Land-plus-Sea coach.
Three cruise-port picks worth pre-booking
Pan Pacific Vancouver. Directly above the Canada Place cruise terminal; roll bag out of the room and you are at check-in. The single most convenient embarkation hotel on the coast. Rate band: $340 to $560.
Baranof Hotel, Juneau. Downtown 1939 art deco landmark 4 blocks from the AJ Dock. Best port-of-call overnight for anyone extending a shore day into two. Rate band: $190 to $340.
Harbor 360 Hotel, Seward. On the small-boat harbour, 30 seconds walk to the Kenai Fjords day-cruise dock, direct coach pick-up for the Land-plus-Sea package to Denali. Rate band: $260 to $410.
Practical planning notes
- Book Vancouver embarkation hotels 6 to 9 months out for peak July or August sailings; Seattle has more inventory and often opens up at 3 months.
- One-way northbound sailings to Whittier disembark on Tuesdays and Sundays; Seward disembarks Wednesdays and Saturdays; rooms clear the fastest for the night before your coach.
- Vancouver-Alaska is scenic Inside Passage the entire way; Seattle-Alaska routes cross the exposed Queen Charlotte Sound overnight and swap 12 hours of scenery for a $200 savings.
