Chena Hot Springs Resort, Fairbanks

Chena Hot Springs Resort pairs the two things people come to the Alaskan Interior for in winter: a natural geothermal soaking lake and some of the darkest, clearest aurora skies within reach of a road. It also runs a year-round ice museum kept frozen by its own geothermal power.

Where it is

At the end of Chena Hot Springs Road, about 60 miles north-east of Fairbanks. It is a genuine drive, roughly 90 minutes, and the road ends at the resort.

Who it suits

Aurora watchers who want somewhere to warm up between viewings, and travellers who would rather have an activity base than a city hotel. The soaking lake is the reason most people return.

When to go

Best from September to March for aurora combined with the hot springs. Summer is quieter and greener, with hiking and the ice museum still open, but no aurora.
