Kenai Fjords hotels

Kenai Fjords National Park has one road-accessed feature (Exit Glacier, 12 miles from Seward) and one water-accessed feature that is the actual reason you came (the tidewater glaciers of Aialik Bay and Northwestern Fjord). Almost everyone stays in Seward and day-cruises. Two lodges sit inside the park boundary for guests who want to sleep among puffins.

Three Kenai Fjords picks

Kenai Fjords Wilderness Lodge (Fox Island). Six cabins on Fox Island in Resurrection Bay, all-inclusive with the boat transfer from Seward, guided kayaking. Best pick for a two-night unplug inside the park. Rate band: $1,100 to $1,600 per person all-inclusive.

Kenai Fjords Glacier Lodge (Pedersen Lagoon). 16 cabins on Aialik Bay across from tidewater glaciers, all-inclusive fly-in or boat-in. Best pick for glacier proximity. Rate band: $1,400 to $1,900 per person all-inclusive.

Harbor 360 Hotel (Seward base). On the small-boat harbour boardwalk in Seward, 30 seconds walk to Kenai Fjords Tours dock for the day cruise. Best pick for a low-friction one-nighter around the day-cruise. Rate band: $260 to $410.

Practical planning notes

  • The 8.5-hour Northwestern Fjord day cruise reaches active tidewater glaciers; the 6-hour Aialik Bay cruise is scenic but does not reach the head of the fjord. If you have one day, take the longer one.
  • Season runs mid-May to mid-September; late May and early September are cheaper and see the same wildlife with fewer boats in the bay.
  • Exit Glacier is walkable in an hour from the visitor centre; the Harding Icefield Trail above it is a 4 to 6 hour round-trip with a 3,000 foot climb, one of the great US day hikes.
