Palmer hotels
Palmer sits 42 miles northeast of Anchorage in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley, a farm town founded by 1935 Depression-era relocation colonists and now the base for Matanuska Glacier ice-trekking, Hatcher Pass hiking, and the Alaska State Fair. Palmer runs quieter and cheaper than Anchorage while keeping you 45 minutes off the Glenn Highway to Glennallen. Useful if you are self-driving north to Wrangell-St Elias.
Three Palmer picks
Hatcher Pass Lodge. A-frame cabins at 3,000 feet in Independence Mine State Historical Park, 45 minutes above town. Best pick for a mountain base with wildflower ridges out the door. Rate band: $220 to $340.
Colony Inn. 1935 Colony Project building on Elmwood Avenue, walkable to downtown Palmer, refurbished but still period. Best pick for character on a budget. Rate band: $140 to $210.
Alaska Choice Inn. Roadside motel on the Glenn Highway, functional and clean, easy for early Matanuska Glacier tour pickups. Rate band: $115 to $180.
Practical planning notes
- The Alaska State Fair runs late August through Labor Day and books out every room from Wasilla to Palmer 6 months ahead; either book by February or stay in Anchorage and commute.
- MICA Guides on the Matanuska Glacier runs ice-treks from mid-May to mid-September; the drive to the glacier from Palmer is 1 hour 45 minutes each way, plan a 9 hour day.
- Hatcher Pass Road closes past Independence Mine from mid-September to early July; the lower loop stays open year-round.
