Alaska road trips
Alaska road trips reward patience. The scenery is worth the miles, but the miles are long and the speed limits low. Plan shorter driving days than you would in the Lower 48 and leave room for weather.
Parks Highway: Anchorage to Fairbanks
360 miles. 7 to 8 hours of pure driving, 2 to 3 days with stops. Overnight in Talkeetna on the way up. Denali the next day. Fairbanks the day after. The classic two-city loop.
Seward Highway: Anchorage to Seward
125 miles, one of the most scenic short drives in North America. Turnagain Arm bore tides, beluga whales in season, Dall sheep on the cliffs, mountain tunnels. 2.5 hours direct, plan on 4 with stops.
Denali Highway: Paxson to Cantwell
135 miles, mostly gravel. Open Memorial Day to mid-October. The best fall-color drive in the state and almost nobody on it. Full-size spare tire and a tow plan are standard advice. Drive it east to west in late August for the best color.
Richardson and Glenn
Glenn Highway east from Anchorage toward Valdez, 300 miles of Chugach views. Richardson from Valdez north to Fairbanks, 365 miles through the pipeline corridor. Either is a 3 to 4 day trip with overnights in Glennallen or Tok.
