Cruise extensions
The cruise line will sell you a two-day bus tour to Denali. Do not take it. Build your own pre or post cruise extension and you will see more, spend less, and sleep in a proper bed.
Pre-cruise from ANC
Fly in a day or two early. Stay in Anchorage downtown the night you land. Do a flightseeing tour from Lake Hood or a day on the Kenai. Take the Coastal Classic train to Seward the morning you board.
Post-cruise north
Disembark in Seward or Whittier. Take the train back to Anchorage the same afternoon. Pick up a rental car and drive the Parks Highway to Talkeetna for a flightseeing day. Continue to Denali for two nights.
Independent alternatives to the cruise-line bus
The Denali Star train is slower but more scenic than the bus and ends in the same place. A rental car gives you control of the timing. Either works out cheaper than the cruise-line package.
Timing
Minimum useful extension is 2 nights pre or post. 4 to 5 nights post-cruise lets you hit Denali plus a Talkeetna flightseeing day and still make the flight home from ANC.
