Quick answer
What to pack for Alaska
Layers, rain gear, and a bug net in July. What you do not need. Where to buy if the case went missing.

Summer essentials
Base layer (wool or synthetic, not cotton). Mid layer fleece. Rain jacket and rain pants (Alaska rain is serious). Waterproof boots. Wool socks. Hat and gloves even in July. Insect repellent and a head net.
Winter essentials
Base + mid + heavy down + windproof shell layers. Insulated boots rated minus 20 or lower. Wool socks doubled up. Hand warmers. Red headlamp for aurora viewing. Balaclava or face gaiter. Full-face sunscreen.

What you do not need
Bear spray for city stays and most lodge trips (the lodge provides or does not need it). Formal clothes (nowhere dresses formal). Heavy DSLR unless you know you will use it. Cotton jeans (they soak and chill).
Gear you can buy on arrival
REI Anchorage (midtown) has everything for summer or winter. Alaska Industrial Hardware carries Alaska-specific gear. Sportsman’s Warehouse for fishing and hunting. In Fairbanks try Beaver Sports or Big Ray’s.

Packing strategy
Soft duffel bag over a hard case if you are taking any small flights (Bush Alaska, Southeast, Kodiak). Small flights have weight limits (often 50 lbs total with personal item). A dry bag for phone and camera on boat days.
