Quick answer
The Alaska Railroad
Seward to Fairbanks via Anchorage, Talkeetna, Denali, and Healy. Slow, scenic, and sometimes the best option.

The routes
Denali Star: Anchorage to Fairbanks daily, mid-May to mid-September. 12 hours. Coastal Classic: Anchorage to Seward, peak summer. 4.5 hours each way. Glacier Discovery: Anchorage to Whittier and Grandview. Short, scenic, half-day.
GoldStar vs Adventure Class
GoldStar has a glass dome, an upstairs open-air deck, and an included dining room. Adventure Class has large windows and cafeteria-style food. GoldStar is about 60% more. Worth it for Denali-to-Fairbanks or Anchorage-to-Seward on a clear day.

Rail-route lodges
Walkable from the depot: Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge (shuttle), McKinley Chalet, Denali Bluffs, various Healy options. Booking a lodge near the train station saves shuttle fees and morning stress.
When the train beats the car
If you are not planning to drive the route anyway, and you want to enjoy the view, the train wins. The dome cars do things no rental car can. If you plan to stop for day hikes or detour, the car wins.

Booking tips
Book 6 to 9 months ahead for peak summer. Windows on the west side (seats with odd numbers in most configurations) face Denali on a clear day between Talkeetna and Cantwell. Off-peak shoulder fares drop 30% to 40% below peak.
