Alaska airports guide

Alaska has 240 registered public airports and one that carries almost every visitor: Ted Stevens Anchorage International (ANC). Fairbanks (FAI) is the aurora gateway. Juneau, Ketchikan, and Sitka are the Southeast entry points but most cruise passengers arrive by ship, not by plane. This page maps the airport to the itinerary so you buy the right ticket.

75+ Alaska hotels + wilderness lodges reviewed on-site or through verified sources.
Cruise + aurora Cruise-port pre and post stays, aurora ratings on every Interior hotel.
Names respected Denali, Utqiagvik, Kachemak, Chugach and Wrangell-St Elias, spelled and used correctly.

Three ways to choose the right Alaska airport

Anchorage (ANC) for cruise + Denali + Kenai. Direct from Seattle year-round (Alaska, Delta), and seasonal direct from LAX, San Francisco, Chicago, Minneapolis, Portland, and (summer only) Newark. Rental cars, Alaska Railroad depot 3 miles away.

Fairbanks (FAI) for aurora + Interior. Direct from Seattle year-round (Alaska), summer direct from Minneapolis (Delta) and seasonal from Chicago. 20 minutes to Chena Hot Springs Road, closest US airport to the auroral oval.

Juneau (JNU) or Ketchikan (KTN) for Southeast standalone. Direct from Seattle on Alaska Airlines. Useful if you are ferrying the Inside Passage or doing a lodge stay without a cruise ship.

Practical planning notes

  • There is no road connection to Juneau. Every visitor arrives by plane or ferry. Rental cars are limited (roughly 200 vehicles in the whole city, book 3 months out for July).
  • Alaska Airlines runs the milk run (Seattle to Ketchikan to Wrangell to Petersburg to Juneau, some flights continuing to Yakutat, Cordova, Anchorage). It is charming, it is slow, and it is often the cheapest way to combine two Southeast towns.
  • Ravn Alaska and Alaska Airlines regional jets connect Anchorage to bush hubs (Utqiagvik, Nome, Kotzebue, Bethel). Bring warmer layers than you think you need; walk-off temperatures 40°F below the Anchorage forecast are normal.
