How we pick the lodges we cover, how we handle sponsored listings, and what we will not do.
How we cover properties
Coverage criteria
We cover lodges across Alaska that meet at least one of: a consistent editorial presence on the property’s own website, an operational history of three seasons or more, recent Google reviews averaging 4.0 or higher (30+ reviews), or a verifiable presence in the legacy Alaska Internet Marketing network (pre-2020 coverage).
We cover a property once we have either visited or interviewed the operator. If neither has happened, we flag the entry as “unverified” until we do. We prefer to cover fewer properties well than many poorly.
We refresh each property’s page once per year at minimum, more often when a lodge changes hands, renovates, or has a shift in season. We remove properties that go out of business or substantially decline.
Sponsorship
Sponsored listings
We accept paid listings (sponsored properties) marked clearly in the property page and in any round-up where they appear. Sponsorship does not change our opinion. A lodge that pays to be listed still gets an honest page; if we cannot recommend it for most trips, we do not take the listing.
Editor’s Picks are never sponsored. The picks are chosen on merit and refreshed at the start of each season. Sponsored properties appear in category lists but are not selected as picks.
We disclose the sponsorship relationship on the property page and in the newsletter where applicable. We do not use affiliate links in a way that would influence a recommendation.
What we will not do
Non-negotiables
We will not invent awards, renovations, or star ratings that cannot be verified. We will not lift marketing copy from the lodge’s own site. We will not describe a property in terms that imply an experience we cannot confirm.
We will not pretend a dry cabin is a wet cabin or a fly-in lodge is road-accessible. We will not call something a “hidden gem” or “must-visit.” We flag closures, season cutoffs, and honest trade-offs directly, even when a sponsored lodge would prefer we did not.
We will not sell your email address. Subscribers to the newsletter get the newsletter; that is it.
