Still peak through mid-month. Silver salmon run takes over from reds. Late August starts autumn tundra color, especially in the Interior. Cruise ships at max capacity in Southeast.
September
Best shoulder month. Tundra turns. Aurora season begins late in the month. Lodges start closing mid-September. Denali Park bus runs until around September 15. Cooler and quieter.
October to March
Aurora season. Most summer-only lodges are closed. Fairbanks stays open for the aurora trade. Chena Hot Springs. Dog sledding in February and March. Not the trip for first-timers.
