Kenai Peninsula
Salmon, halibut, and glacier cruises within a road day of Anchorage. The most-requested region for a reason.
Who it suits
The Kenai does almost everything right
Cooper Landing and Soldotna put you on the Kenai and Russian rivers for red and king salmon. Seward is the base for Kenai Fjords glacier cruises. Homer, 225 miles south of Anchorage at the end of the road, is a different kind of holiday with its own halibut fleet. Road-accessible, cabin-rich, and reliable.

Frequently asked questions
Where should I base on the Kenai for salmon fishing?
Cooper Landing sits at the head of the Kenai River for sockeye and kings. Soldotna is downstream for guided drifts. Kasilof is the quieter alternative.
How far is Homer from Anchorage?
225 miles south on the Sterling Highway. Plan on 4.5 to 5 hours. The drive is scenic; do not rush it.
Can I day trip to Kenai Fjords from Anchorage?
It is long but possible via the Coastal Classic train or a 2.5-hour drive each way to Seward. Staying in Seward for at least one night is the better plan.
When does the Kenai River close?
River stays open year-round but guided fishing runs June through September. Check current Alaska Department of Fish and Game regulations before booking.
Is Seward or Homer better for a first Alaska trip?
Seward for glacier cruises and day trips from Anchorage. Homer for halibut, bohemian vibe, and the end-of-the-road feel. If you have 7 nights, do both.
